A little less than a week ago, we here on Oppo witnessed one of our own pass a landmark in gearheaddom: Crazedclay !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , for the first time ever. Crazed's car of choice was his trusty modified Malibu, and as you can see, it went well. And it reminded me of my first burnout. It was in one of these:

Kinja'd!!!

A Chrysler 300C Heritage Edition. Not a particularly good car, but it had a 5.7 Hemi with 390lbs/ft of torque, which was more than enough to get the rear wheels smoking. And it must be said that it probably looked damn good doing it. So what about you Oppo? What car first help you sacrifice the rear (or front, I won't judge) tires to the Gods of Power? And, more importantly, was it yours?

Build revs.

Let off clutch.

Still haven't done one, when I get my accord put back together I will "test" the new clutch and do one, 150 foot-pounds should be enough to light em up, I'm down to the wear bars in the fronts anyway...

150 might be enough, under the right conditions. I've certainly seen it done with less, but I've also seen cars with more that could't do it for various reasons.

My first burnout was done in a 40hp FWD car - a diesel Rabbit pickup with 200k miles. In case you're wondering how the fuck, this was unintentional, as it was because I was trying to move a heavy tongue weight trailer. I am a total genius.

Well, there is not clutch-dumping in an auto.

The 300C had enough torque that all I had to do was floor the gas and brake at the same time.

Kinja'd!!!

1994 Hyundai Excel GI.

3 door FWD hatchback, with a fast-revving 1.6L four-pot up front, a super short-throw factory 5-speed manual transmission, and a curb weight that would barely crumple a Pringles can. Seriously, this thing weighed nothing . It also didn't have traction control of any sort. Couple that with the skinniest tires you've ever seen and wet weather became...interesting. Leaving from a dead stop, you would, without a doubt, spin your tires at least a little. And yet, once up to speed, it was impossible to hydroplane because the tires were so skinny.

This led to my first burnout. I was leaving a friend's house just after I'd dropped him off after a long day of causing some serious mayhem on the local dirt roads (you have no idea how fun this thing was on a dirt road- especially after we'd removed the rear seats and half the interior panels), I decided to flip him the bird and gun it. The thing is, it'd just finished raining. Hard. Meaning the streets were quite wet. So as I dumped the clutch, it just began to spin the tires, but instead of moving forwards, the car literally began moonwalking backwards, because it was on a slight uphill incline.

My friend's expression was priceless as he watched my car do a moonwalk-burnout in front of his house, tire smoke and steam just billowing out as I bounced off the rev limiter. Speaking of which, I was bouncing off the rev limiter. Again. This was par for the course, as I was 19 and this car's tachometer no longer functioned. So I upshifted to second and got back on the gas. The moon-walked burnout ceased. It was still a burnout, but now it was a burnout with slight forward motion. Upshifted again, to 3rd. Still spinning tires like mad, barely creeping forward.

4th gear, tires still spinning, but now it was actually beginning to move at a decent pace. It bounced off the rev limiter again briefly before it finally hooked traction and off I went.

The next day I bought new front tires. They cost $75. Per pair. Brand new. $95 mounted and balanced. This was hilarious, not only because it was so cheap, but also because I'd only paid $100 for the car in the first place. During the time I owned that car, I spent more on front tires than I'd paid for the car. About 5 times over.

As for my friend, he wouldn't shut up about that burnout for the next month. At least.

Lets see.. Twas myself and MagoosLastStand(my older brother). We were in a 87" Crown Victoria. We did donuts on ice in the parking lot of our high school. Then again later in life he had a rental Impala. We found it appropriate to do a FWD burnout in the lot right behind my elementary school. Good times...good times

I will have to tag along and admit the same and I am near Clay in age and have owned a multitude of cars only making it worse. I've gotten wheelspin in plenty of cars but never a full on burnout. My current choices are the Miata and the Jeep. I don't think the Miata can break the traction of the Direzzas for that long. I get wheelspin and a little mini burnout with a 6k clutch dump but it hooks up real fast. I don't know if the Jeep is up to the task.

I love them, but mine was a total lemon. I bought it when it was 16 months old, with 5200 miles on it, certified. I only owned it 3-1/2 months, and in that time it spent 31 days in the shop for various problems (fortunately under warranty). I traded it in on a new '06 Sierra, that I'm still driving.

Despite how bad to was to me, I still miss it. It was by far the nicest, fastest, best handling car I've ever owned.

Y'know... I've never done just a burnout, I mean I've spun tires off the line, but never tried to do a stationary burnout.

I have done this though... and that involved lots of smoke/spinning tires(and clutch kicking with my ~150ft*lb).

First time was on accident in my mom's Vue.

In a right turn lane thing, line of cars coming, floor the pedal to go... boom instant tire smoking goodness. 248 ft-lbs of torque at like 2200 RPM does magical things.

The first time I intentionally did it was in the Safari. The back wheels were an absolute bitch to break loose.

Same with the Flex. With the soft snow tires on, it's hard not to screech the tires.

And it's no surprise, considering it also has 248 lbs/ft of torque.

My first burnout was in my dad's '04 Impala in Oct 2008. I was seventeen. Setting the parking brake helped get the front wheels spinning, but also resulted in dragging and subsequent flat spots on the rear wheels. Several days later I was on the hook for a new full set of Michelin X-ices. It didn't happen again. I've gotten a little frisky with my Jeep, but not to quite the same extent. Tires are expensive.
